The animal rescue centre was set up in 2001 after the owners found a number of badly mistreated indigenous capuchin monkeys being sold on the street. The centre was set up with the hope that it may be able to prevent any more similar horrifying scenes. The centre is now working to its absolute limits, which is only made possible by the continuing help of passionate volunteers.

Volunteer Role

The centre is dedicated as well to raising community awareness. Volunteers can help out with school visits, which are intended to educate the nearby community and bring to their attention the illegal trafficking of animals and the rights of animals.  This is in the hope that they will become intolerant of anyone carrying out such practices.

Whilst on the project you will mainly be involved in the daily care of the large variety of animals at the centre, having close contact with the animals. These are likely to include monkeys, pumas, jaguars, ocelots, lions, macaws, parrots, and a number of other South American species.

You will be involved with:
  • Feeding duties and day to day care of the animals
  • The cleaning and repairing of enclosures
  • Building of new enclosures
  • General construction and maintenance of the park.
It is vital to keep improving existing facilities in order to provide a more natural environment for the animals and improve the process of rehabilitation. Other more specific duties may include helping with rescue missions in collaboration with the UPMA, and assisting with the release of animals as they are returned to their natural environment.

Why not combine this programme with our language & culture experience? A great way to learn the language before you join, an exceptional way to experience the culture and a great way to meet the locals!

Project Location

South of Quito, Near Tambillo and Cotopaxi volcano.

Accommodation and Meals

The volunteers live in a relaxing detached house with all mod-con facilities.  Currently,

the house can sleep up to nine people at any one time.  There is a porch with a few hammocks at the front of the house, and to its side there is a volleyball court. All through the 50-hectare property, volunteers have spectacular views of Cotopaxi and other nearby volcanoes.

Meals are not incorporated into the cost of this programme. Volunteers give $15-20 a week to a kitty for food and the food is bought at the local village.
