The focus at the park is the preservation and conservation of native species, with a specialization in the fauna of this particular region of Australia. 

Volunteers have the chance to become involved in a variety of hands-on wildlife, environmental and conservation projects and tasks.

Volunteer Role

The program is ideal whether you are traveling on a tourist visa or on a working holiday. For visitors, the park emphasizes education at all ages and levels by providing a fun and relaxed but informative day out. 

You will be involved in tasks such as: feeding of birds, tree planting, platypus and koala monitoring wallabies and kangaroos, cleaning enclosures, trail restoration and fence maintenance.

Your duties vary during your time at the sanctuary but some examples of duties that you will assist with include:
  • Koala & wombat run (cleaning animal enclosures)
  • Food preparation and feeding
  • Cleaning and filling wombat ponds
  • Assist in cleaning snake enclosures (pythons only)
  • General cleaning of storage areas
  • Gardening
  • If you have IT skills you can assist with updating signage
  • Assisting in weighing koalas
  • Clean up at the end of the day
  • Assisted landscaping of enclosures such as mulching, placing new limbs
  • Painting of tired areas such as seating, koala canisters

Location

The sanctuary is situated 17kms south of Townsville in tropical North Queensland, Australia.

Accommodation and Meals  

Volunteer accommodation is in a large guesthouse on a hill overlooking the city. Three people will be sharing in a dormitory style room. Facilities include a lounge, kitchen and laundry.

Whilst volunteering, you will be given morning tea and lunch at the park. As breakfast and dinner isn’t included in the program cost, you are free to try out the local restaurants or shop for food at the local supermarket, cooking together with the other volunteers.

$339/€259 deposit to secure place, balance due 10 weeks before departure.
