This volunteer eight week experience will bring you into three of Zimbabwe’s excellent National Game Reserves.   You’ll also have the opportunity to experience a one week course on survival in the bush and enjoy an amazing time at the Lion Rehabilitation Project.   This special and unique Volunteering in Zimbabwe program draws upon the experience of professional Reservation guides, Reservation park managers and the consultation expertise of Doctors of Zoology and Ecology.  They are all concerned with conserving the natural wilderness environments of Zimbabwe, and sharing the data from that research with other research program going on in Africa.  You’ll be part of this important team.

Big 5 Conservation Volunteer Itinerary


Week 1: Cultural Familiarisation & Bush Awareness Course
You don’t have to take this course, but it will give you a firm and enriching foundation in understanding the African Bush, introduce you to African food and give you an insight into this incredible continent.

Week 2 & 3: Zambezi National Park - Victoria Falls 
You’ll be so near that you’ll feel the spray of the stunning Victoria Falls as you work on daily conservational programs in Zambezi National Park.

Week 4 & 5: Hwange National Park
This world renowned park is home to forty thousand elephants alone.  There are also nearly 300 lions and twenty thousand buffalo inhabiting the park. Rhino and leopard also roam freely here. This part of the program will teach you important conservational techniques such as sweeping for snares, removing snares, darting animals caught in snares, visual observations and game counts.   You’re learn other every day aspects of National Park conservation too.

Week 6 & 7: Matobo National Park
This project aims to help exchange cultural knowledge with the nearby community, whilst also preserving Zimbabwe’s rich ecological heritage.

Week 8: Lion Breeding and Rehabilitation Project
Not only will you have the opportunity for relaxation after the time spent in the African Bush, but you’ll be able to enjoy horse-riding, canoeing and watching game.  You’ll also have a chance to:

  • Walk alongside lions and watch young cubs learn to stalk their prey
  • Work on the world’s only project for release of lions back to the wild
  • Explore the savannah grasslands on horseback or on elephant

Project Location

You’ll be working and traveling through three of Zimbabwe’s great national reserve parks.

Accommodation & Meals

As you will be constantly joining different conservations programs, your accommodation will vary accordingly.  However all accommodation is included in the price of the whole program and you’ll find it comfortable though basic.

Programme Summary:
Various projects based in three of Zimbabwe’s most magnificent National Reserve Parks. Learn bush survival and awareness techniques; about the culture of local communities; horse-riding, canoeing and watch local big game. You’ll even have the chance to go walking with lions and ride on horse or elephant back into the African Savannah.
