This is an excellent and rare chance to work closely on a project helping to protect the endangered species of Black Rhino. You’ll be based in center of the midlands of Zimbabwe.
The project has the approval of the World Wildlife Fund and you’ll find yourself working with a team of highly-respected conservationists and researchers. You’ll be asked to help track, monitor and gather essential data in order that procedures can be put in place to protect this at risk animal.
Because of decades of the illegal poaching trade in rhino horn, the numbers of the African Black Rhino has suffered dramatically. A concerted effort by concerned conservationists was made in the 1990’s to halt this illicit trade, and now thankfully, populations have begun stabilize and increase. However the work needs to continue for the Black Rhino numbers to reach an satisfactory level. The Black Rhino Conservation Park in the midlands of Zimbabwe is essential in the worldwide rehabilitation efforts to stop this species becoming extinct, and you’ll be helping to preserve them.
The placement starts with a complete orientation program, introducing you to the center, then you’ll meet the local community with whom you’ll be working.
Volunteer Role
This programme offers you a unique opportunity to live and share Africa’s rich, wild and colourful experiences. You will be living in close contact with the black rhino, elephants, buffalo and all the other species of wild animal on the 10,000-acre conservancy.
You will witness incredible animal relationships, hear their sounds, record vital information, and learn the appreciation of simplicity from communities. During your time on the programme you will have brilliant opportunities to get outstanding photography, as there is a variety of wildlife all within close proximity.
LocationDuring the program, you be given tasks such as monitoring the black rhino, observing its movements, tracking it, whether by foot, aided by experienced guides, or via vehicle, noting their general states of health and gathering information. You’ll even have the opportunity to “air spot” these animals by plane, on aerial monitoring missions.
Volunteering in Zimbabwe will mean that you work in close proximity to the indigenous local communities of Zimbabwe, and you will have the chance to learn about and experience the culture of these people directly. Along with the conservation tactics described above, you’ll also sweep for snares, taking part in patrolling boundaries and also help counting game.
There will be the opportunity to enjoy other optional activities such as rafting nearby river rapids, touring other game reserves and taking part in bungee jumping.
Accommodation and MealsVolunteers will be staying in a comfortable double storied farmhouse, which is situated at the centre of the ranch and on the edge of a dam. Often Elephants, Rhinos and Hippos will come to browse in the garden, which is a stunning sight.
You will be staying in a shared bedroom (either double or four people sharing) with shared bathrooms. Hot water and electricity is available but there may be power cuts so remember to bring a torch! The house has a large dining room, two communal sitting rooms with fireplaces in each and a kitchen. In the evenings volunteers can meet in the sitting room to relax and talk about the days events.
Simple meals and basic house keeping duties will be provided and you will be required to help with keeping the house clean and tidy, maintaining the garden and the vegetable garden.
