The Pantanal is a huge land locked delta that floods annually from the tributaries of the Paraguay River.  It spans over 36.5 million acres and forms one of the world’s most productive habitats to fauna in the Americas.

The floods, boosted by the tropical rains, create a giant nursery for marine life including 260 species of fish.  In the dry season, the waters retreat and enormous numbers of birds and animals arrive.

The Volunteer Role

Volunteers to this project witness first hand the amazing productivity of the Pantanal and the startling amount of wildlife that live in it.  You will work alongside a local University to conserve the environment and its wildlife.

Volunteers will assist with some of the following tasks:

  • Capturing peccaries & following peccary foraging trails
  • Opening trails
  • Behavioral observations
  • Radio tracking
  • Mammal census
  • Fecal analysis
  • Fruit experiments & Fruit census

You will be trained on how to collect the data and information, identify animals and radio tracking.

Project Location

The Pantanal, one of the most magnificent and productive wetland systems on the planet, is a huge, 36.5 million-acre landlocked river delta in central South America, located in the upper Paraguay River basin and straddling the border with Paraguay and Bolivia.
