Guatemala Sports Development Project

If the idea of helping to develop a sports program in an impoverished school appeals to you, then this program based in a small village in Guatemala may be just what you’re looking for. Guatemalans are passionate about their football, but that doesn’t mean everyone receive tuition in the game. Particularly children in poor areas, they usually only get to play in scrappy fields or kick balls around in the streets.

If you volunteer on this program you have the chance to help develop and establish a training program in a school that has limited resources for children to learn physical games and education.

Volunteer Role

This program gives you a lot of opportunities to initiate programs and also the freedom to create the facilities you want to use to enable you to teach.

Building facilities to teach sports - this includes clearing fields, making football goals etc
Setting up day by day teaching plans for each sport/game
Teach different sports
Set up after school clubs/teams and organise matches

Spanish Tuition

For this program an intermediate level of Spanish is required. You’ll be interacting a lot with the local community, and especially children, so you need a comfortable level of conversation with them. If you’re not at this stage yet, taking our Guatemala Language and Cultural Experience program will help you get up to speed with your Spanish and is a good combination with the sports program.

Project Location

The project is based in Alotenango, 14 kilometers from Antigua.

Accommodation and Meals

Volunteers on this program stay with host families. This helps you to meet local people and settle quickly, as well as experiencing Guatemalan culture from a totally different perspective. They will be on hand to offer advice, support and a secure place to be based.

They will provide you with two meals daily, breakfast and evening meal. All volunteers have to purchase lunch but it is usually low cost in Guatemala.

Programme Summary:
You’ll help to establish much needed sports programs and facilities for very poor children in Guatemala. In your free time, you’ll the chance to visit nearby Mayan relics and ruins.
