India Volunteer Goa Programme
Goa is located on the western coast of India and needs the help of volunteers as the locality remains extremely poor and unaffected by its' prominent tourist industry. Volunteers in India can offer much needed and invaluable help to children and adults in the deprived and neglected local community.
The Goa Volunteer Experience has the following structure
- You will be met at Mumbai Airport (formally Bombay) and will spend a night in a hotel to relax after your flight.
- Spend your second night in Lonavla, a small town near Mumbai where you will visit a local market before starting your 3 day adventure trek.
- On your 3 day trek you will experience traditional settlements and see some wildlife. You end up staying in a tribal village – a real experience!
- After your physical trek it’s off to live close to an Ashram – a temple like place where spiritual leaders live – for a 3-day course on yoga, meditation and gaining wisdom from ancient Indian customs.
- After this you arrive in Goa itself where there are beautiful beaches and a distinctive local culture. You will stay here for 17 days. Your orientation will teach you about culture, history, social issues and your volunteer work. Volunteer work varies, you could teach at a local school, care for young children at a day care centre or help with computer education depending on your preference and the needs of the local people.
Project Location Following your orientation, Ashram experience and activity adventure, you will move on to the beautiful setting of Colva for the volunteer phase of your journey.
Colva is the largest and most stunning of India’s beaches and runs for 25km along the South Goa Coast. The beach consists of about 25kms of the finest powder white sand and is lined along its shore by coconut trees.
Accommodation & MealsAshram: You will share with two to four people in a hotel room close to the Ashram. Bathrooms will vary between European flush toilets and bucket baths.
Colva: You will be housed in purpose built shared accommodation sharing basic rooms with bunk beds right next to the beach. Rooms may sleep up to four people with a simple en-suite bathroom fitted with European toilets and showers. Hot water is seldom required because of the climate, but can be used for a bucket bath.
Volunteers are expected to be responsible for the maintenance of their rooms and to help wash the dishes after meals. All meals are included and consist mainly of vegetable and occasionally fish curry, rice, Indian bread and fruit.
