The Real Gap sports development expedition was developed with the intention of enhancing the lives of numerous communities in Kenya, whilst also creating challenging volunteering opportunities to career breakers and gap year students alike. The Sports Project Expedition has been created with the aim of developing a continuous program of health and sport promotion, as well as helping to educate the local communities, and particularly young people about HIV and AIDS. Sport has been proved to be a vital and successful educative method, and the project will hopefully help the spread of increased well-being and health awareness.

The Expedition will primarily be based with three schools. Volunteers will be fully involved in the project, ranging from activities such as low-level building of sporting facilities to teaching and coaching sporting activities. Volunteers will be instructed to contribute to areas most in need by a local Sports Development Expedition co-ordinator, both in terms of physical or human resources, though with these projects the possibilities for helping are endless.

Orientation
Once you have arrived at the Camp, you will be given a familiarization session, covering subjects such as safety, local amenities, geographic area, and even basic Swahili lessons!

You will then introduced to the local communities that you will be working with.

Sports Project Volunteer Role

Whilst working in the volunteer period, you will placed in a team so that there will be equal opportunity for everyone to work on the sports development side, and also have time in the local schools. Your activities will be as follows:
  • Coaching children different sports - mainly be football, however, there is the possibility to teach other sports of interest. The volunteers will play a role in selecting the football teams for the tournament at the end.
  • Building new sports facilities - this will involve low-level building i.e. football pitches and basketball hoops etc. Most of the work will involve clearing areas where sport can be played
There is a broad variety of ways that your skills will be utilized, so being open minded to every possibility is useful!

Though they vary in size, the tents can accommodate up to six people and all are single sex. Western style toilet facilities are available on the camp.
