The Kenya Sports and Teaching Program is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference in a rural Kenyan village. Working as part of a wider community program, this sports project lets you offer your volunteer services both through sports and teaching.

Mainly working as a sports coach, you can teach the sport you are most experienced or interested in. This includes popular sports like rugby, football and cricket for the boys and volleyball, badminton and netball for the girls.

Sports Volunteer Programme

In the mornings, you can help to teach classes in your school, such as English and IT; however, if you have teaching experience you will be able to make an even greater impact and teach in a number of other areas. You will be shadowing the local teachers for a number of lessons and mainly work as a teaching assistant. However, sometimes you may be required to run the whole class and even come up with your own lesson plans! The schoolteachers will be on hand to give you all the assistance you need to do this and also help you with teaching techniques and class discipline.

Coaching Placement
You will be located in one of the six main schools in the Kimilili area, depending on which sport(s) you wish to coach. Different schools have differing sporting needs, so your skills and interests will be matched to the school that you are most suitable for. In Kenya, sports classes are conducted separately, according to sex.  Females are only allowed to be taught by a female teacher and boys are only allowed to be taught by a male teacher. Your placement obviously follows this pattern.

Project Location

Kimilili, Kenya

Project Age Limit

Minimum age 18, maximum decided on potential participant's health

Accommodation and Meals

Whilst on the project, you will be accommodated in houses that you will share with the other volunteers on the program. The houses are comfortable though very basic and are enclosed in a gated and walled compound.

The house cook will provide all your meals, which are made from locally produced ingredients.
