Malawi Sports Coaching and Teaching
Typical of schools in the developing areas of Africa, there are far more children than is possible to teach properly in every class, sometimes 150 to 200 pupils in one classroom. Therefore sport is not seen as a priority in education, and often there are not dedicated staff or facilities that can accommodate this often neglected part of Malawian children’s education.
This new sports volunteer project aims to help address this issue and allow sports to be taught in schools. Based on the shores of Lake Malawi at Monkey Bay, the program will give you the vital task of teaching local children a number of sports arranging from basketball, netball and football.
Volunteer RoleBased around four schools, you will be on hand to assist the schedule of local teachers. You will be active in various roles on this project, which include:
- Teaching sports in schools – popular sports requiring volunteers are netball, volleyball and football
- Organise after school sporting events such as clubs, tournament and matches
- Work with local sports teams to assist coaches and gain good coaching experience
- Teach academic subjects in the mornings such as English, maths or vocational skills
Because Malawi is so hot, a lot of sporting activity happens in afternoon and evening periods, because temperatures become cooler. This allows you time to relax on nearby beaches or visit local places of interest, or if you want to help support the schools, teaching extra subjects.
