The Volunteer Programme

This unique project offers volunteers the opportunity to work closely with Orang-utans in a Malaysian zoo for 15 days, before joining a two-day visit to a wildlife center to see Orang-utans in rehabilitation. The group then heads out to the Borneo jungle where they monitor this remarkable great ape in its natural habitat.

Working alongside the indigenous tribes-people of Borneo and trained experts, volunteers help to preserve and protect the orang-utan in both its natural habitat and in captivity. The project also aims to help the local Iban-tribes people to capitalize on the eco-friendly tourism opportunities provided by the Orang-utans.

The highlights of the programme include:

  • Spend 15 days working in a Zoo in Taiping or Kuala Lumpur working closely with primates of which Orang-utans are the main focus. Activities include feeding, cleaning and enriching life of primates.
  • 2 day visit to Matang Wildlife Centre with our expert staff - see Orang-utans in rehabilitation before being released to the wild.  Learn about how the centre works and understand Orang-utan behaviour.
  • Travel to Batang Ai and then upriver to the Iban longhouses on the edge of the Indonesian Malaysian border where Orang-utans roam free and pristine rainforest still survivies away from loggers and modern civilisation.
  • Monitor the apes in the wild, deepest darkest Borneo jungle where Orang-utans roam free, carry out nest counts, and collect and record insects.
  • Help local Ibans make Orang-utans an intergral part of the local economy through ecotourism projects.

Project Location

Your first night will be spent in Kuala Lumpur. You will then spend 15 nights in your zoo accommodation, three nights in Kuching, seven nights in Batang Ai and then spend your final evening back in Kuching.

Accommodation and Meals

Accommodation is included throughout this program and will vary according to your location.

Your first night will be spent in a guest house in Kuala Lumpur before moving on to a three bedroom property or boutique hostel - depending on the Zoo you have chosen to work in. You will be housed in a basic longhouse wooden lodge next to the Iban village in the Batang Ai National Park for the final part of the program.

Although most meals are provided or a weekly allowance supplied, volunteers should expect to buy the occasional meal.
