Sports Coaching Sri Lanka
School children have limited access to sports in Sri Lanka despite being one of the world’s leading cricketing nations. If coaching does exist, it is usually confined to the bigger cities and taught in the top-end schools leaving a huge number of children without any physical education.
Based in a local school in a deprived area of Sri Lanka, this volunteer project has been developed to provide sports coaching clinics for pupils at the school and those from the nearby community. The children learn from your experience and skills and profit from the structured environment you can help to create for them.
Local Orientation A local orientation briefing will be given by our project coordinator to familiarize you with your surroundings and the Sri Lankan culture.
- Local language and culture - social norms etc
- Expected behaviour - at host family, dress code at project
- Safety - what areas to avoid, what to do in an emergency
- Locations of important amenities - banks, hospitals, embassies
- Transportation and travel in Sri Lanka - where to go, how to get there
- Volunteer placement - what your project involves, who you need to report to, other volunteers etc
Volunteer ProgrammeBased 300 kilometers from Colombo, in a town called Tissamaharama, volunteers working as sports coaches are given considerable flexibility and freedom and are encouraged to develop their own activity programs. The work includes:
- To coach different sports to the children during allocated sports lessons and after school clinics - football, volleyball, basketball/netball, cricket etc. This may involve working with a current sports master or teacher or working on your own.
- To design training drills and games for each sport to help translate the skills being taught
- To build/improve existing sports facilities and sport equipment
- To organise after-school training sessions and inter-school/community games
- Select teams from the children to compete against each other in a final tournament for the end of the volunteer placement.
- To organise a monthly sports day, with fun games that the volunteers can make up or use from their sports days when they were at school.
- To referee or umpire games etc
kThe majority of sports coaching takes place after the school day which runs from 8.00am-2.00pm. The sports clinics generally start at 3pm, leaving volunteers free for much of the day to help teach English to the children who love speaking with native Englishmen/women.
