If you’re passionate about horses and want to spend part of your gap year helping out with an essential development program then this one program is for you.  The program is specifically aimed at rehabilitating horses on the Wild Coast of South Africa.

Volunteer Role

On this volunteer program you will play an important part of a team devoted to rehabilitating abused horses and concerned with nursing them back to full health. As part of your reward for contributing to this project, you can enjoy regular trail treks on horse back along the stunning Wild Coast.

The program can be hard work, but a typical day is varied, interesting and full of amazing opportunities.

The work will include:
  • Feeding farm and trail horses
  • Mixing feed for farm and trail horses
  • Grooming, lunging, exercising and schooling work with the horses
  • Checking the horses, ensuring that there are no problems
  • Checking water troughs, ensuring that they are clean and full
  • Go to see the beautiful scenery of the Kei Cuttings and meet some of the emerging farmers
  • Beach riding trails

Project Location

Near East London on the east coast of South Africa

Accommodation

Volunteers will either stay in shared cottages, based near the dune banked forest near to the coast, that overlooks a lagoon, or overlooking the river at Chintsa East village.
